Ray Tomlinson This guy is the guy that sent the very first email ever, way back in 1971, and this is his web page where he talks about that eventful moment in history. He also has a Ray's Links page of his own on his site, that's how I found him, by doing a search on Ray's Links to see how my site was doing. His Ray's Links page has a link to his Email site, and links to 9 java based games I'm assuming he created, although he makes no claim of this on the page. Wikipedia article on email clients This article defines what an email client is, and goes on to explain the various aspects of how email works. It ends with a list of some of the open source, freeware, and retail email clients available. The 25 Golden Rules of Email This PC Magazine article gives some always relevant advice on being a good email user on the net. I do not follow all of their rules, as I always use my real name on the web, and since I have good junk filtering in my email client, I also use my real email address everywhere I go as well. Incredimail This is the email client my Mom uses. 8-) It has a lot of eye candy tricks for your email including animations, backgrounds, emoticons, animated email notifiers, and 3d effects. I think it's a Windows only program as when I try the download link it wants to send me an .exe file. Outlook 2007 Known Issues This web page points out some of the known problems with Outlook 2007, with fixes for those problems. Outlook 2007 is slow, You receive blank messages in Outlook, Outlook is crashing, Microsoft Outlook 2007 won't connect to Microsoft Exchange 5.5, when deleting an RSS feed on one machine while multiple Outlook clients are running against the same store, the entry in the Account Manager for the feed does not get removed, in Outlook recurring appointments that extend into the next week don't print correctly, in Outlook In the To-Do Bar, Related Messages and Messages from Sender under Find All do not work, and many more. Thunderbird This email client is Mozilla based, and has the ability to learn what you consider to be junk mail, and will filter them out for you automatically on download. It is a very capable email client that can also handle newsgroups. It can be extended with add ons that enhance it's capabilities. One of my favorite add ons is the one which allows me to directly edit the html of an html message. This allows me to create emails with much richer content than is normally possible. It does not work with newer versions of Thunderbird above 0.8 - 1.0, but the same functionality can be had with one called Stationery which does work with the newer versions from TB 1.5 to TB 3.0 beta. Another nice add on identifies the email clients of those people who are emailing you. It's very surprising how many different email clients there are out there, as you will see with this add on. It even identifies people's use of Blackberry devices and some cell phones to do their email. I have used Mozilla based email clients almost from the beginning of my use of computers, and have around ten years worth of email saved up and currently available to me in Thunderbird, which has no problems with such a large email folder set as I have. Seamonkey Email Client This one comes with the Seamonkey suite, and is very similar to Thunderbird as it too is Mozilla based. It too can be extended with add ons. I've never used it, but have it installed and looked it over. It has junk filtering and also handles newsgroups. Thunderbird and Seamonkey are both available for Windows, Linux, and Mac platforms. Windows Live Mail This is the new manifestation of the Windows email client which is similar to Outlook Express. It handles Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo!*, and many more web mail systems as well as pop and imap mail. It also has spam filtering, and virus scanning abilities. Pine This is an email client which has grown from the Unix platform, and is now also available for Windows. It is no longer under development due to it's licensing restrictions causing administrative problems for the originators, and is being replaced by it's successor Alpine which is being released under a less stringent license model. Both are available for Unix, Linux, Windows, and Mac platforms, with Alpine also available for the Nokia N800 platform. Apple Mail Tech Support This page tells you how to set up Mail on the Mac 101. Here is the page which describes the OSX Leapord version of Apple Mail.It is also extendable with plug ins, some of which are available at Apple Mail Plug ins and Tools. Zimbra Desktop Client This is an offering from Yahoo that can be used on Windows, Linux, and Mac platforms. It is open source software and therefore free to use. Gmail This is Google's take on web based email and is free to use. Here is it's list of features. Like
