Windows Tips / Changing the size of Thumb Nail Views in My Computer

If you use the thumbnail views of pictures available to you in My Computer, when you have "View As Web Page" selected for the folder, you may have wondered if there is a way to change the size of those thumbnails so you can see them easier.

Fortunately it can be done with a bit of work. To do so you will need to do some minor editing of the folder.htt file for that folder.

To do so follow the steps outlined below.

Open My Computer, and browse to the folder for which you want to change the size of the thumbnail views for. Right click the folder pane on the right, and the following context menu will appear. Select "Customize this Folder"

The following dialog will appear.

Make sure that "Create or Edit an HTML document" is selected. Now click Next, then Next again on the following dialog which will appear.

After you click the next button on this dialog you will have Notepad open with the Folder.htt file for this folder loaded in it. To change the size of the thumbnail view you will need to change three settings as follows:

Thumbnail settings for width and height are indicated in pixels, and if you change them to be very large, you will also need to make changes to the FileList setting for left, and the Panel setting for width. Make the two of them match, and keep in mind that they are set in percentage of screen width, not pixels.

After making your changes, close notepad, making sure to tell it to save the changes on exit. Now click the Finish button on the remaining dialog box.

Your changes will now show. Keep in mind that the first thumbnail you view right after making a thumbnail size change will appear corrupted, but if you point at another image file, then back to the first one, it will appear normal again.
