Have you just upgraded your internet connection and want to know how fast it is now? The following links are to Speed Test sites which will tell you how fast your upload and download connection is. Some of these sites only give results in kilobits or megabits per second, which doesn't tell me much, as none of the programs I use to download with show results in megabits or kilobits. Megabits are a marketing tool made up to make connections sound faster as they use a higher number. Megabytes per second would be a better measure, as most people understand what a megabyte is, or kilobytes per second, which is what most programs read out when you are actually downloading something. I've just upgraded my Qwest DSL connection to the Platinum level, and have tested my connection to find I am getting a rate of 331 KB per second, which is twice as fast as my previous Silver Plan connection. It's not as fast as the promised 640KB per second, but I guess I can live with it. 8-) Speakeasy - Speed Test This site gives the results in easier to understand KB per second down below the main test window which I appreciate, since the megabits per second numbers mean nothing to me. I never see those figures when downloading things, all my programs give me results in KB per second. Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test This site has a very nice looking interface for the speed test, but only reads out in kbps which is kilobits per second. You select the site to connect to for your test from a world map graphic. Speed Test - dslreports.com This is a flash based speed test. they have several other options like java based on their front page, so check them out as well. Their java based test generates a graphic image of the results, and also generates a link to the graphic that you can use to share your results with others, just copy and paste the link code to your page. Results are in kilobits per second. They also have an iPhone browser speed test, and a list of other speed test sites. Broadband Speed Checker This speed test site is located in the United Kingdom so it is appropriate for people in that vicinity since you get a better idea of your best speed from a site near you geographically. It gives results in kilobits per second for upload, and download speeds. You can get simple copy, and paste code for putting a speed test like the one immediately below from their site. They also have code, and the other things you need to set up a speed test that works from your own server instead of theirs which is nice. I have set up the following speed test to work from my server, instead of choosing the simpler to implement one which works from their server. To find the test that you can run from your own server click the "get your own test" link, then next to the speed test image on the right you will find another link which says "Do you want to measure speed to your own server?" Follow that link, and the instructions on the resulting page to set up your own Internet Speed Test. Provided by broadband speed test
