I've been watching a few technology shows, and it is becoming apparent to me that great things are in the offing. The most important of which is that someday money and jobs will disappear because machines will be doing ALL OF THE JOBS FOR US. There will be no reason to work, because everything will be done by the machines, including thinking up new innovations in technology, medicine, and other fields. All physical, and yes mental labor of any sort whatsoever will be performed by machines of one kind or another. Solar power, hydrogen power, wind power, and wave power are the four main inexhaustible power sources that need to be developed and utilized to make this dream become possible. Never mind renewable resources, these resources will never become exhausted at all, so no renewal is necessary between now and when the sun goes supernova. Open source software will also need to be a driving force as there will eventually be no profit in making software since there will be no money. Many good people out there are developing programs right now for the masses to use with no payments of any kind, and this will become a trend in the future. Computers will learn in the future, and some already do. They will be able to write software on demand in the future for any purpose you can think of. With the ongoing advances in solar technology, and miniaturization of computers and machines, there will be things that will clean up the leaves in your yard, possibly even using the leaves themselves as fuel, and excreting fertilizer as a waste material in the process. Miniaturized machines will do a raft of tasks, and the idea of small machines which can aggregate themselves into larger machines to perform more complex tasks will come into being as portrayed in the Stargate television series by the Replicators. These machines will of course be much smaller than the Replicator's self replicating blocks, more likely on the order of being microscopic. Scientists are currently experimenting with the ability to read signals from parts of our brains and using those signals to control computers and other devices. When you couple this with RFID [radio frequency identification] and Bluetooth like technologies which will also get smaller and smaller it will be possible to control nearly any device simply by thinking about doing so. Eventually, there will be nothing for human beings to do whatsoever except pursue pleasure, since artificial intelligence will take over all the mundane tasks like coming up with the next brilliant idea. You will be able to do things like say to the "computer" (which will exist as a distributed intelligence among many individual devices) "Please come up with a cure for herpes." and within a matter of minutes to days it will do just that for you. Since no one will need to do any work, and all products and food will be brought to us by the machines, there will no longer be any need for money. Who would care about having money, when all they have to do is think, "I need a new pair of shoes, bring me a pair or Reeboks." and they would show up on your doorstep by the next day, or even that evening. Advances in other areas currently being developed will make that process even easier, as the product could be made right there in your own home with a device similar to the Replicators on Star Trek, The Next Generation. Scientists are already working on these types of devices, which build objects by layering them up from base materials. Coronary bypass surgery will no longer be necessary, since tiny robots could be fed into the patient's arteries which would harvest the occlusion matter, and transport it out of the body through a small tube inserted into the artery. This same technique could be used to remove tumours and other foreign matter within the human, or animal body. With the advances in miniaturization it will even someday be possible to control the weather. I envision a swarm of mini robots containing miniature refrigeration units making ice on demand at the poles to keep the glaciers and ice sheets in place. Another swarm of heat robots could keep them melted off to the proper degree to provide rain when necessary. Careful control of the two, and other new devices as yet unheard of will allow full weather control. Flies, cockroaches, mice, rats, or other pests in your home will become a thing of the past, as there will be machines that can fly around your home and catch the flies, then take them back outside for you. Similar devices will take care of the other pests as well. Your cat or dog will be policed by small machines which pick lice or fleas off of them, and either kill and dispose of them, or carry them back outside. Litter will become a thing of the past, because anything you throw down will be retrieved by swarms of small robots that pick it up, followed by mobile bins which the small robots will sort the differing materials into for recycling. I look forward to this brave new world, and only hope that I live long enough to see it come to fruition. How about you? I seriously envy the very young who may likely see these things come to pass in their lifetimes. What will people do then? Will they just sit around and vegetate, forgetting how to maintain these wonderful machines? With enough advancement of technology, will that even matter? The machines will be so advanced, they will be able to maintain themselves, and design and build the next newer generations of themselves as well. What will people be like when this comes to pass? There will likely be many people who make hobbies of designing things like architecture, cars, clothing, or doing artwork or performing music, and acting, writing books etc... You would then make these designs available to the world at large for production. Fame will become a matter of how many people adopt your designs or request copies of your art. Sports is an area which will become bipolar with separate human and android leagues. Fame for humans will come from their achievements which the machines will also be able to mimic, eventually becoming indistinguishable from humans except for the fact that they will outperform them. There will even be android actors, musicians, and artists in the future. Here's to a long life, and a very bright future. Like this page?
