When I installed service pack 3 on my Windows XP machine it was done through automatic updates via a DSL connection and on my eMachine T3410 I experienced only one problem.

The problem on each subsequent boot was that Windows Live Messenger kept trying to re-install and tossing an error. All I had to do to fix this was to un-install Windows Live Messenger, and then re-install it. Other than that the install went smoothly and only downloaded around 50mb of the 300mb or so total of the complete install file.

Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3 This Microsoft Knowledge Base article includes links to solutions for common problems encountered when updating to SP3.

How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state This Microsoft Knowledge Base article explains how to use msconfig to set your system up for a "clean boot" that doesn't load the normal plethora of services and applications at start up. How to optimize your chances of installing Windows XP SP3 successfully This page basically emphasizes that the best way to install SP3 is under a "clean boot" from a downloaded SP3 installation file instead of using Windows Update. He claims that the SP3 install over the net leaves 650mb worth of files on your drive. As noted at the top of the page when I updated over the net only about 50mb of files were downloaded to my computer so where do the other 600mb come from? I checked my Windows XP install and found 170 Folders, 4,765 items, totalling 759.5 MB in uninstall folders from all updates that have been installed on my machine since it was new. Since I still have 26gb left on the Windows drive and never install anything to the system partition I'm in good shape for space so I'm not worried about the uninstall files.

You receive a “Stop 0x0000007E” error message after you upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3 on a non-Intel-processor-based computer.  This is the infamous continous reboot problem that happens after upgrading an HP AMD based computer to SP3. The affected computers are ones which have an image loaded to their drives that was generated on an Intel based system. This causes an intel driver to try to load after the update which causes the crash and reboot cycle. This happens mostly on HP systems, and HP has a fix and instruction page for their computers with an Upgrade Utility. Also, a program has been written which fixes the problem and can be found in the next link below.
